Ilham Aliyev was asked to stay for one more year (New Azerbaijan)

Baku's chairmanship in the Non-Aligned Movement has been extended for another year, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry reports.

They don't change horses in midstream. Even more so, the chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). This is how it is worth commenting on the statement of the Azerbaijani diplomatic department. Quote: 'Azerbaijan's three-year chairmanship in the Non-Aligned Movement was supposed to end in 2022. However, Azerbaijan responded positively to the request of the member states to chair the Movement for another year before the chairmanship passes to Uganda in 2023.'

Independent foreign policy, striving for constructive resolution of conflicts and active participation in reconstruction processes, that is, everything that has been the core of Baku's foreign policy efforts in recent years, have raised Azerbaijan's international authority to a fundamentally new level.

The fact that Baku has become the leader of the South Caucasus, and President Ilham Aliyev plays a key role in big regional politics, has become an objective reality for a long time. Moreover, Ilham Aliyev secured the status of the leader of the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries, his speeches are imbued with a sincere desire to change the tense international situation, the dominance of the law of force, unfair distribution of resources, and a sustainable policy of 'double standards.' In its determination to consistently uphold the principles of international justice, Azerbaijan often enters into confrontation with the powerful of this world order. Undoubtedly, such a brave, honest and consistent position of the leader of the Caucasus region became possible thanks to the success of Aliyev's internal political doctrine - in 17 years Azerbaijan has turned into a self-sufficient independent country with a developed economy and large state resources. The bold and consistent policy of the President of Azerbaijan has largely strengthened the authority of the Non-Aligned Movement. Raised this organisation, which until now was considered a 'coalition of third countries of the world,' to a qualitatively new level. A striking indicator of the growing international influence of the Movement was the decision of one of the superpowers - Russia to join the organisation.

The fact that Azerbaijani diplomacy is perceived by many in the world as an example of behaviour in the international arena became clear during the recent Interim Conference of Foreign Ministers of the Non-Aligned Movement member countries, held on 13-14 July.

Creation of a database covering the basic humanitarian and medical needs of the Movement's member states, strengthening of relations of NAM with the European Union and other international institutions, introduction of a number of important resolutions on the UN agenda, including those on 'vaccine nationalism' - a list of Baku's successes for its year the chairmanship of the Movement can be continued and continued.

Azerbaijan is the leader of the South Caucasus

Step by step, brick by brick, Azerbaijan is striving to form a more equal world order. The list of successes along this path, one wants to repeat, is long - but there is still more to be done. This is what underlies the decision to extend Baku's chairmanship for one more year.

With regard to the same pandemic, 'The Movement must take strong, coordinated and targeted steps beyond COVID-19. Azerbaijan has provided support to many countries of the world. Just a few days ago, Baku sent new batches of vaccines to Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.

In this sense, it can be useful to hold a high-level meeting of the member states of the Non-Aligned Movement to exchange views and determine the position of the Non-Aligned Movement regarding the recovery period after the pandemic. Given the complexity of the challenges posed by the pandemic, it would be advisable for the Non-Aligned Movement to initiate the creation of a UN High-Level Panel on Global Recovery from COVID-19. This panel can prepare recommendations related to global measures to better overcome the pandemic in the world,' said Ilham Aliyev.

And this is only one of the directions of Baku's activity as chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement. In addition, without any exaggeration, the close - and not always benevolent - attention of the whole world is riveted to Azerbaijan: will it be able to successfully carry out reconstruction work in the liberated territories, turn them into territories of green energy, transform the destroyed territory, four times exceeding the territory of Luxembourg, into a space of well-being with high living standards.

Thus, the domestic agenda becomes a foreign policy agenda, since Baku's success in this direction will become a unique international experience for a number of states, some of whose territories have been destroyed by war.

The enemies believe that this is impossible, and the territories of the war will remain so. Azerbaijan has a chance to prove that this point of view is wrong. And thus, become a leader in the transformation of areas destroyed by war.

'I want to assure you once again that Azerbaijan will make every effort to contribute to increasing the international authority of the Non-Aligned Movement, strengthening solidarity within the Movement, protecting justice and international law,' Ilham Aliyev said at the interim conference of foreign ministers of the Non-Aligned Movement.

They trust him - and agree that he must retain his leadership in the Movement for another year.
