Lt.Colonel Atakishiyev was flying crashed MiG-29 fighter


One of the most experienced pilots in the country, Lieutenant-Colonel Rashad Atakishiyev was flying the MiG-29 fighter jet that crashed over the Caspian Sea, Spokesperson for the Defence Ministry Vagif Dargahli told Interfax-Azerbaijan Agency.

'The fighter jet was flown by the most experienced pilot, Colonel-Lieutenant Rashad Atakishiyev. He has served in the Air Force for over 20 years and is one of the professional pilots,' said Dargahly.

Meanwhile, the agency notes that Atakishiyev is the son-in-law of the former State Adviser to the President of Azerbaijan, Habil Huseynli. This information was confirmed by Huseynli himself.

As reported, contact with the multipurpose fighter jet of the Azerbaijani Air Force MiG-29 was cut off on 24 July at 22:00 local time during a scheduled training flight. The plane crashed in the territorial waters of Azerbaijan over the Caspian Sea.

The fate of the pilot is not yet known.
