Some inmates released in Azerbaijan (Because of coronavirus)


Some of the inmates serving sentences in the institutions of the Penitentiary Service are being released, Report informs citing human rights activist Novella Jafaroglu.

According to her, on behalf of the Joint Working Group on Human Rights, an appeal was made to the Presidential Administration in connection with the danger of a coronavirus pandemic.

'They started to release prisoners whose sentences expire in the near future. So far, this concerns prisoners whose sentence was to expire in 3 months. Afterwards, persons whose release is in 6 and 9 months will be dealt with. The process will last until April. This is the result of the next humane step of the president of the country, aimed at ensuring that many prisoners could be near their loved ones in such a difficult period,' said the human rights activist.

According to another human rights activist, Saadat Bananyarli, about 300 prisoners were released.
