Foreign Ministry: 'OSCE Minsk Group's statement is unfair and biased'

The OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs, guided by the updated Madrid principles, should first of all require Armenia to withdraw its troops from the occupied Azerbaijani territories and urge it to continue substantive negotiations for a political settlement of the conflict on the basis of the UN Security Council resolutions. This was said by the official representative of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, Hikmet Hajiyev, commenting on the statement of the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group made on May 18, 2017.

'The standard statement of the Co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group made on May 18, 2017, where they touched only the ceasefire regime, despite the 28th anniversary of the occupation of the Lachin region by the Armenian armed forces and the speech of the Armenian president in the parliament, during which he denied the Madrid principles, is of symptomatic character.

Like the population of other occupied regions of Azerbaijan, 80 thousand Lachin residents turned into refugees and IDPs. Despite the fact that on this day 25 years have passed since the occupation of Lachin region, the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group did not mention this in their statement, which is an unfair and biased approach.

The Armed Forces of the Azerbaijan Republic are in the sovereign territories of Azerbaijan and against the backdrop of Armenia's occupation of Azerbaijani territories provide defence of our country and the security of the civilian population,' Hikmet Hajiyev said.
