Novruz Mammadov: 'Conflict in Karabakh may flare up with new strength'

Azerbaijani Presidential Aide for Foreign Policy Affairs Novruz Mammadov told RIA Novosti that the conflict in Karabakh could 'flare up with new strength,' as it is the result of geopolitical games.

'The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict has been going on for more than 25 years, 20% of the internationally recognised territory of Azerbaijan have been occupied by Armenia. More than a million people became refugees and internally displaced persons. However, for some reason, attempts to present the problem as a frozen conflict continue unabated. It can be stated with certainty that the conflict is the result of geopolitical games,' N.Mammadov said.

According to him, as long as these games continue, the result will not change.

'Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine are a vivid confirmation of this,' said the Azerbaijani presidential aide.

According to N.Mammadov, the frozen conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh can flare up at any moment with new strength.

'International mediators though advocate the preservation of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, but for some reason they prefer not to take an unambiguous position. We expect concrete steps from the co-chairing countries, as well as from the world community, for a just resolution of the conflict,' he concluded.
