Ilham Aliyev: 'There should be no shadow economy in Azerbaijan'

'As a result of reforms in the customs sphere, we were able to significantly increase the budget. Last year we, having made amendments, increased the budget in order to carry out additional work. Additional funds were allocated for the implementation of projects in the social sphere and for infrastructure.'

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev said this at a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers dedicated to the results of socioeconomic development in 2018 and the upcoming tasks.

'Why was this possible? Because there is a new approach to the customs and tax areas. New executives were appointed to positions, personnel changes in leadership were made, and now these structures, especially important for each state, work very well, transparency and utmost honesty are ensured. There is a very serious fight against corruption and bribery. All who were involved in this are brought to justice, deprived of their positions. That is, there is a process of complete recovery, and we were able to see excellent results over the past year,' said the head of state.

'Customs collected additional funds in the amount of 1 billion manats, at the same time, we dealt a big blow to the shadow economy. It is a great misfortune, and we are waging a serious struggle against the shadow economy. There should be no shadow economy in Azerbaijan. Yes, in the world there is no country in which there would be no shadow economy. We do and will continue to fight it with administrative methods, and institutionally - with the implementation of reforms,' said the head of state.

According to the president, the fight against the shadow economy is multifaceted. And the government uses all methods to combat the shadow economy.

'Everyone should understand that in Azerbaijan everything should be carried out within the law. We will not allow breaking the law, and everyone must draw conclusions for themselves. Therefore, this year serious steps will be taken to deepen the reforms,' said Ilham Aliyev.
