Hikmet Hajiyev clashed with Armenian lobbyists in Washington (Video)

An event dedicated to the foreign policy of Azerbaijan was held on 11 June at one of the influential think tanks operating in Washington: the Eurasian Centre of the Atlantic Council, Azeri Daily reports.

The event was attended by Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs George Kent, Head of the Foreign Policy Department of the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration Hikmet Hajiyev, former US Ambassador to Azerbaijan Richard Morningstar, as well as representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited in Washington and analysts.

Taking advantage of the openness of the event to the public, a large number of representatives of the Armenian lobby also took part in it.

Speaking at the event, George Kent told the audience about the strategic importance of Azerbaijani-American relations. Speaking about the importance of the South Caucasus, he described Azerbaijan as an important partner, noting the successful cooperation in the field of security, energy and economic development.

The representative of the US State Department stressed that the growth of mutual visits of officials and an increase in dialogue are an indicator of the development of bilateral relations. On behalf of the US government, George Kent thanked Azerbaijan for significant support for NATO's peacekeeping operation in Afghanistan.

According to him, the United States is a supporter of the peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, remaining true to the mediation efforts within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group. He added that an early resolution of the conflict would create an opportunity for peace and prosperity in the region.

Then, with the moderation of the former US Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Richard Morningstar, a conversation was held with Hikmet Hajiyev. Hajiyev spoke about the basics of Azerbaijan's foreign policy, its strategic position, relations between regional states, energy and transport projects that have changed the map of the region, as well as the current stage of the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

The official representative of the Presidential Administration noted that despite the patient and wise approach of the Azerbaijani leadership, the Pashinyan government does not demonstrate a serious position in resolving the conflict, on the contrary it was marked by steps and statements that further strained the situation.

In this regard, Hikmet Hajiyev spoke about the recent provocations of Armenia on the contact line of troops, which ended with the death of Azerbaijani servicemen, and noted that these steps are aimed precisely at undermining the negotiation process. Hikmet Hajiyev, listing the economic difficulties experienced by Armenia, said that resolving the conflict would benefit Armenia in the first place, that the only way out of this crisis for Armenia is to resolve the conflict. Hikmet Hajiyev said that, unfortunately, Armenia and its diplomats do not yet understand this.

The representative of the Presidential Administration noted that in parallel with the participation in peace negotiations, Armenia continued illegal activities in the occupied territories, and stressed the importance of the international community paying great attention to this. In conclusion, Hikmet Hajiyev answered questions from the audience. At this stage, the Armenian lobbyists participating in the event (the event was open to the public) began to ask the representative of Azerbaijan provocative questions and Hikmet Hajiyev answered these questions, exposing the aggressive policy of Armenia violating the norms of international law.
