Deputy Eldar Ibrahimov: 'Oppositionists switched to our side for money, positions and mandates'

One of the founders of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party (Yeni Azərbaycan Partiyası, YAP), Member of the Milli Majlis (National Assembly) Eldar Ibrahimov made a sharp statement about former opposition members who later switched to the side of the government.

Eldar Ibrahimov called them 'enemies, who went over to the side of the government for the sake of money, positions and mandates.'

'Even if we managed to buy them, there are foreign forces who do not want to see the development of Azerbaijan. These people are in the hands of these external forces. No matter how much money we give them, they will still not serve our national interests. Their main goal was to get money from external forces and take power into their own hands. Yes, some of them then went over to our side, earned money and even became deputies. But I want to say that the enemy will never become a friend. Therefore, we do not need their friendship,' said Eldar Ibrahimov.

Eldar Ibrahimov is convinced that the opposition sided with the authorities for the sake of money

This statement caused such a resonance in social networks that soon the Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan, Ali Hasanov, made a new statement, noting that 'the statements distributed on behalf of Eldar Ibrahimov do not reflect the position of the authorities and the ruling New Azerbaijan Party.'

'As an assistant to the President of Azerbaijan on socio-political issues and the person represented in the leadership of the YAP, I declare that the position of the party and the current government on this issue has been determined by the National Leader Heydar Aliyev and remains unchanged,' Ali Hasanov said.

The presidential aide recalled that as far back as 1992, National Leader Heydar Aliyev had appealed to all the healthy forces in Azerbaijan and urged them to unite around a single idea of statehood and Azerbaijanism, contributing to the construction of a new, young Azerbaijani state.

According to him, the National Leader had always remained faithful to the idea of unity and in the name of national unity created the conditions for people with intellectual and managerial qualities to be represented in the YAP or the ruling team.

Ali Hasanov disagrees with fellow party member

Ali Hasanov added that the same policy has been consistently pursued by the successor to the political heritage of the National Leader Heydar Aliyev, the incumbent President, Ilham Aliyev. A clear example of this is the statement by Ilham Aliyev, 'I am the president of all Azerbaijanis,' made after the 2003 presidential election.

'Once again, I note that these principles are unchanged. The Azerbaijani authorities are ready for dialogue and cooperation with any person or group who wants to serve the Azerbaijani state and statehood. The statements distributed on behalf of Eldar Ibrahimov do not reflect the position of the YAP and the current government,' Ali Hasanov said.
