Ilham Aliyev to Lavrov: 'Unfortunately, there were no visible results in the settlement of the conflict' (Photo)

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has received the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Sergey Lavrov, who is in Baku on an official visit, informs the press-service of the Azerbaijani head of state.

Welcoming the Russian minister, President Ilham Aliyev said: 'Mutual visits, regular visits by foreign ministers have become a good tradition. Of course, presidents set the tone. This year we had two meetings with Vladimir Putin in Beijing and Sochi, not counting our communication on the sidelines of international events. The presidents set the tone for the development of our relations, and, summing up the results of the year — I think it is already possible to summarise them — we note that the year was very successful for our relations. We have made significant progress in many areas, strengthened political interaction, and actively supported each other in international organisations. I must say that the Azerbaijani delegation in full force voted for the return of Russia to PACE and thereby expressed solidarity. Also, we always feel support from the Russian Federation on issues that concern us in international structures.'

Further, the head of state noted the successful official visit of First Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva to Russia: 'I would like to ask you to convey gratitude to President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin for the invitation, for attention, for awarding Mehriban Aliyeva the Order of Friendship, for the kind words that were addressed to her, and for a very constructive conversation and negotiations that affected almost all areas of our interaction.'

President Ilham Aliyev also noted economic successes: 'Trade turnover is growing from year to year. The results have not yet been summed up, but I think that there will be growth somewhere around 25 per cent, not lower. In the transport sector, we have also achieved good results and are expecting the opening of a bridge across the Samur River in the near future, which will significantly increase trade and mutual visits.'

The head of state also noted the problems of resolving the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan: 'Unfortunately, there were no visible results in this direction. I believe that the main reason for this is the counterproductive policy of the Armenian leadership, especially the statement that 'Karabakh is Armenia.' And I am glad that both on your part and on the part of the co-chairs from other countries the correct assessment was given to this strange, to put it mildly, statement. But we will continue cooperation with the co-chairs of the Minsk Group. In the near future a meeting of the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia will be held. We look forward to your continuing active participation in the negotiation process.'
