'Aliyev and Sargsyan are in favour of continuing negotiations on Karabakh' (Co-chairs' statement)

Presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia Ilham Aliyev and Serzh Sargsyan are in favour of continuing negotiations on a peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Russian Co-Chair of the OSCE Minsk Group Igor Popov told journalists in Baku.

'The OSCE Minsk Group hopes to continue political dialogue between the parties to the conflict. We discussed this issue in Baku and in Yerevan. As a result of these discussions, we can say that the Presidents of the two countries are supporters of the continuation of peace negotiations,' Ambassador Popov stressed.

He also expressed serious concern of the OSCE Minsk Group in connection with the growing tension in the Karabakh conflict zone. 'The mediators of the OSCE Minsk Group express deep concern over the recent tensions on the front line,' he said.

The co-chairs noted that the mediators of the negotiation process on the Karabakh settlement discussed this issue at meetings with the President and the Minister of Defence of Azerbaijan. 'We are very sorry for the serious violations of the ceasefire on the front line, which occurred on the eve of the visit of the co-chairs to the region. We must do everything possible to prevent this from happening again. We will do everything we can to reduce tension,' Igor Popov emphasised.

He noted that the recent appeal by the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs to the parties to the conflict was aimed at reducing tension in the zone of contact between the troops.

As was informed earlier, last week the situation on the confrontation line became more acute. In response to provocations by the Armenian side, the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan destroyed 6 Armenian servicemen.
