Moscow organises meeting between Aliyev and Sargsyan

Russia will be the main organiser of a meeting between Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, which is to be held before the end of this year, the Izvestia newspaper reported on Monday with reference to a source in the Russian Foreign Ministry.

'Moscow became the main mediator in this issue, as the attempts of the other co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group on Karabakh (USA and France) to seat the representatives of Baku and Yerevan at the negotiating table failed,' the article says.

According to the source of the publication in the Russian Foreign Ministry, who is familiar with the course of the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement, Moscow is organising a meeting between the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan.

'This is the only thing we are participating in. The French tried to seat Yerevan and Baku at the negotiating table, but it did not bring any benefit. Meanwhile, the maintenance of dialogue is of fundamental importance. Due to this, a full-scale war did not break out in the region. However, the goals and vision of the parties are still different,' said the interlocutor of Izvestia.

The edition reminds that earlier on the margins of the informal meeting of the foreign ministers of the OSCE countries, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held talks with his Azerbaijani and Armenian counterparts. In the same place, a proposal was made to organise a meeting of the leaders of the South Caucasian states.
