Russian media: 'Stop sale of weapons to Armenia on credit!'

The Russian 'Nezavisimaya Gazeta' in another author's article asks about the expediency of selling Russian weapons to Armenia on credit.

'Deliveries of arms on credit are a common thing. Practically all countries involved in the sphere of military-technical cooperation practice this method. Yerevan received from Moscow both political support, and military (including the Russian military base), and economic preferences. That is why no one was surprised when in 2015 the Russian Federation agreed to provide Armenia with a large loan - $200 million - for the purchase of weapons. Last month, deliveries under this loan agreement, which entered into force in February 2016, were completed.

Armenia received Smerch MLRS launchers, Igla-S missile systems, Avtobaza-M radio technical reconnaissance systems, TOS-1A heavy flame throwing systems, Tiger armoured vehicles, 9M113M ATGMs, RPG-26 grenade launchers, etc.,' writes the publication.

Nezavisimaya Gazeta reminds that at the NATO summit, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that Yerevan is a party to the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) and he 'sees Armenia in this organisation and in this security system.' The PM considers Russia a close ally, but hopes to develop relations with both Russia and with NATO, the European Union and the United States. The opportunity to discuss current regional problems within the framework of the NATO Partnership for Peace program is not being lost. At the same time, according to media reports, the Armenian side will be included in the single gas transportation system in the South Caucasus and in the 'road map,' where Armenia is viewed in a framework of a strategic partnership with the US and NATO.

'Many experts have noticed the change in Yerevan's position. Nnd how not to notice the arrest of the CSTO Secretary General Yury Khachaturov within the framework of the case on dispersal of protest actions on March 1, 2008. The court, however, agreed to release him on bail, but no one took off the charge. How can it be: to talk about adherence to the interests of the CSTO and immediately send to arrest the secretary general of this organisation? After all, it was possible to discuss this issue with the other CSTO members in advance and first to stop Khachaturov's authority in this post, and only then detain him. After all, such actions strike a blow to the organisation of such a force, with which only direct aggression against CSTO members compares. And then again, Armenia's Minister of Defence David Tonoyan, praising Russian weapons at a meeting with journalists, immediately adds that although the Armenian-Russian good-neighbourly relations are strengthened by many treaties, it is impossible to exclude revision of certain items in these documents if necessary.

Or maybe it is necessary to act simpler - not to sell modern weapons on credit, which is often, as historical experience shows, not returned for economic reasons or not recognised at all, but to deliver it for 'live' money. Then everything will be honest, no offense,' writes the publication.
