Lavrov on complexity of Karabakh conflict

Russia welcomes the preservation of relative stability on the contact line in Nagorno-Karabakh, the issue of its final status is one of the most difficult, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with Mediamax Armenian news agency.

'We welcome the preservation of relative stability at the border and the line of contact. We believe that a further decrease in tension could help create an atmosphere conducive to the negotiation process,' said Lavrov.

'With regard to the issue of the final legal status of Nagorno-Karabakh, it is one of the most difficult,' he stressed. According to the Russian minister, 'the leaders of the co-chairing countries of the OSCE Minsk Group have repeatedly stated that the status should be determined during the negotiations by political means, on the basis of legally binding expressions of will.'

'The parties have yet to agree on the parameters of this work, including organisational aspects,' said Lavrov.
