Putin on upcoming meeting between Aliyev and Pashinyan in Brussels (Updated)

Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomes the upcoming meeting between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Brussels. According to the head of the Russian state, it is important to conduct a dialogue between the parties.

'I agree with both colleagues that the more contacts, including direct ones, the better; direct bilateral contacts are generally a priority,' he said during talks with Aliyev and Pashinyan in Sochi.

'I know that in the near future you also have a meeting in Brussels, you agreed to come there. We welcome that too. The more opportunities for direct communication, the better,' the Russian leader addressed Aliyev and Pashinyan.

The Russian President said that he had recently talked about this with the head of the European Council Charles Michel. 'He's waiting for you. I hope we will take some step forward and it will be possible to take further steps at other venues as well,' said Putin.

Note that on December 15, within the framework of the EU-Eastern Partnership summit in Brussels, a meeting will be held between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Putin is convinced that Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, for the sake of common interests, should strive to strengthen ties between the countries.

'We have been together for centuries as part of a single state, we have very deep historical ties, and we would not want them to collapse. On the contrary, we must strive to restore them and maintain them in the future,' said Putin.

According to him, a lot has been done over the year to resolve the situation in Karabakh, but, unfortunately, not all issues have been resolved so far. 'During this time, indeed, a lot has been done. Unfortunately, not all issues have been resolved yet, I know about incidents at the border, and about tragic incidents when people on both sides are killed and wounded,' he stated.
