Azerbaijan marks National Flag Day


Today, on 9 November Azerbaijan marks the National Flag Day. This national holiday was formally established by President Ilham Aliyev in a decree signed on 17 November 2009.

It should be recalled that the national flag of the Third Republic of Azerbaijan was first adopted 100 years ago, on 9 November 1918 during the existence of the First Republic, founded by Muhammad Amin Rasulzadeh, who later in exile said that historic phrase - 'Once raised flag will never fall!'

It was for the late President, National Leader Heydar Aliyev to uphold this dictum, while Head of the Supreme Soviet of Nakhchivan. On 17 November 1990, the 1918 Tricolour was adopted as the national flag of the autonomous republic. Only several days later this flag was adopted as flag of the whole Azerbaijan, when the decree 'On changing the name and national flag of Azerbaijan' was issued on 29 November 1990. The decree was ratified on 5 February 1991 by the National Assembly of the Republic.

Whereas the decree on the celebration of the National Flag Day was signed by the fourth President, Ilham Aliyev.

On 1 September 2010 in Baku, the opening ceremony of the National Flag Square was held. The flagpole is 162 meters, and at the moment of dedication it was the tallest flagpole in the world.
