Million people in Baku city centre (City hall comments)

The current festivities in Baku on the night of January 1 set a kind of record - hundreds of thousands of people, and, according to some estimates, a million people gathered in the centre of the Azerbaijani capital on New Year's Eve.

Unlike in previous years, this time, along with Baku people in the open, on the streets and squares, a large number of guests of the capital celebrated the holiday. People came to celebrate New Year in Baku from all regions of Azerbaijan, from neighbouring and distant countries.

On the New Year's Eve, the decoration of city streets and parks was also of particular magnificence and diversity. On behalf of the head of state, the city authorities began preparatory work a few weeks before the holiday.

All parks and squares of the city, the Seaside Boulevard, main roads and avenues have been transformed beyond recognition. A huge number of Christmas trees were put up, New Year's garlands and other festive attributes were hung. Music was heard everywhere. The city literally lived in an atmosphere of celebration.

The culmination of the celebration was a grandiose firework, which was watched live by hundreds of thousands of people. But how did the city authorities cope with such an influx of people and, most importantly, clean-up after festivities?

According to the press-service of the Baku City Executive Authority, on the night of January 1, all city services, as well as law enforcement officers and transport workers, worked in heavy duty. Thanks to this coordinated work, it was possible to ensure the normal movement and safety of hundreds of thousands of people.

By six o'clock in the morning, public service workers had completed all cleaning work, and almost perfect cleanliness was ensured in all parks and on the roads of the capital.

The executive authority of the city added that the country's leadership pays special attention to the communal sphere. On behalf of President Ilham Aliyev and the recommendations of First Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva, all the necessary equipment for utilities was purchased. And organisational reforms made it possible to clean up the city in a matter of hours. Even after the New Year's street festivities of a million people.
