On Ashura, bullets from Iran for Armenians who kill Shiites (Our response to Ayatollah, Editorial)

Iran behaved with Azerbaijan not in the best way. Of course, in the entire history of ambivalent, inconsistent and paradoxical (from the point of view of Islamic, in this case, Shiite solidarity) Iranian-Azerbaijani relations, fraternal Tehran, with its inherent Achaemenid cunning, has repeatedly brought a knife to the back of Azerbaijan with a Darius smile on its face.

Just remember the treacherous attack by Armenian units on Shusha on the very day when the acting president of Azerbaijan in Tehran, under pressure from skilful Iranian diplomats led by venerable Ali Akbar Velayati, agreed to conclude a ceasefire agreement with Ter-Petrosyan. Yagub Mammadov signed the document. And with peace of mind he went to his apartments, but after just a few hours, Iranian diplomats with ostentatious oriental sadness on their face, which replaced their premature malicious smile, interrupted the rest of the Azerbaijani head of state with tragic news: Shusha has fallen!

The brotherhood of Iran and Armenia began in 1991. Then nobody thought about Israel in Baku yet

There were many unpleasant things in subsequent years: Persian ideologists with bugs in their heads portrayed Azerbaijanis in the guise of cockroaches, during the first Karabakh war they poured not only oil into the fire of the flaring carnage, but also fuel into the fuel tanks of Armenian tanks and armoured vehicles, called the Caspian their chauvinistic Mazandaran...

Iran was cunning, subsequently explaining its perjury by forced revenge for Azerbaijan's allied relations with Israel. Tel Aviv appeared in the region much later, to be more precise, in 1997, after Bibi's first short-term visit to Azerbaijan. Although Netanyahu, who proceeded from sound logic, not Iranian one, given the ethnocultural identity and religious community of Azerbaijanis and Persians, was very sceptical about the concept of developing relations with a unique tolerant Azerbaijan proposed by Lieberman. Azerbaijan was painted for Netanyahu in the image of the Caucasian Jordan. Bibi took the first step, although he did not fully believe in the future. It was precisely because of the Iranian factor. It is amazing, but the Persian nobility from the first days of the appearance on the political map of the world of the newly formed state called Azerbaijan with a feeling of uncertainty and even doom looked, using the Pahlavi metaphor, 'at the head of the Iranian lion -- South Azerbaijan of 30 million.' This was the case under the Qajars at the beginning of the last century, under the Pahlavi after the end of the Second World War and the Stalinist redistribution of the world, and so it became under the mullocracy...

Netanyahu did not want to fly to Baku. He did not fully believe that Iran could betray Azerbaijan

Iran was looking for any opportunity to weaken Azerbaijan. And is there any surprise at the confusion and shock of Tehran, taken by surprise by the heroic offensive of the battle-hardened Turkic Army, which liberated not only the historical Karadag (low-lying Karabakh, the Iranian part of these Azerbaijani lands is called Karadag to this day), but also the venerated by Molla Panah Vagif cherished dream of the Qajar dynasty of medieval Iran -- impregnable Shusha. And the new history of victorious Azerbaijan, drawing from the former Turkic greatness, is taking shape in the era of decline in the Big East of decrepit Iran squeezed in the sanctions grip...

Azerbaijan and Turkey from the fortress walls of Shusha offered the region a new agenda, voiced by President Erdogan: the Shusha platform of six states could completely change the face of the Caucasus, exhausted by wars. Iran not only repels the outstretched hand of its neighbours, but also with its insidious caravan of trucks to the Armenian separatists, and after this with its hostile statement, it reveals its medieval geopolitical understanding of the region, expressed in the eternal confrontation of Persia with the Ottoman state.

Iranian Foreign Ministry accuses and condemns Azerbaijan. What caused Tehran's indignation, or rather, became the reason for the diplomatic demarche? Iran is dissatisfied with the joint military exercises of Azerbaijan and Turkey in the Caspian Sea, appealing to the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea. The Iranian Foreign Ministry recalls that 'the five littoral states have agreed that the military presence of countries other than these five countries is illegal.'

Iran is right on this issue as never before. But at the same time Tehran made a fatal mistake.

Indeed, on August 12, 2018, the leaders of the five Caspian countries -- Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Iran signed the convention mentioned by the Iranian Foreign Ministry in Astrakhan. And the convention really fixed the provision on the non-admission of the presence of the armed forces of extra-regional powers in the Caspian!

So, what mistakes did Iran make in its statement?

Iranian assistance to the Karabakh separatists. To kill Shiites in the holy month of Muharram

First, this very convention, signed by former President Rouhani, does not apply to Iran itself. Since to this day the Iranian parliament has not ratified the document signed by its own president. The text of the convention states: 'The Convention is subject to ratification. The instruments of ratification shall be deposited with the Republic of Kazakhstan, which acts as a depository.' The ratification documents were submitted to Astana from four states, except Iran. Consequently, Iran itself has deprived itself of the right to appeal to this convention.

Second, as indicated in the text of the convention, it is about preventing the presence of armed forces of extra-regional powers in the Caspian. Turkey with its naval exercises is not present in the waters of the Caspian. A few days ago, short-term exercises were held with the participation of one unit of the naval forces of the brotherly to Azerbaijan country. On the other hand, let's say Turkey will be constantly present in the Azerbaijani water area. How does the presence of Turkey violate the principles of the convention? After all, Ankara has every right to do so, since Turkey is a regional power! If we were talking about Israel, France or the United States, Iran's arguments could become a subject for expert assessments and debates. But we are talking about a regional state.

Another important factor is that Turkey and Azerbaijan did not conduct military exercises, but anti-terrorist ones. And to increase the combat readiness of its own special units in the fight against terrorism, Azerbaijan is free to invite any specialists from any country. After all, Azerbaijan does not ask Iran about the status of the presence of its special units on the territory of Syria, Yemen, Iraq, Lebanon and many other countries? Although these questions are often posed to Tehran by other powers, whose interests Iran directly affects in the Middle East. Iran attributes its military aid to lyrical motivation -- fraternal and Shiite feelings. Why is Iran's brotherly feelings towards the Shiite people of Azerbaijan dulled? After all, Tehran to this day has not answered, even with lyrical motivation, to questions about fraternal assistance to Gregorian Armenia, which is killing Shiites in Karabakh, has it? Killing and killing Shiites from machine guns, cartridges for which in the month of Ashura are delivered from Iran!
