Former head of Azerbaijan Abdurrahman Vezirov dies

Former First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan Abdurrahman Vezirov has died. This information was spread by the relatives of the deceased.

Abdurrahman Vezirov was born on May 26, 1930 in the village of Binagadi. For many years he worked in the leadership of the Azerbaijani and USSR Komsomol, and then transferred to the diplomatic service, headed the USSR diplomatic missions in India, Nepal and Pakistan.

After the start of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict, in 1988, he was appointed first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan. However, mistakes made by A. Vezirov caused political upheavals in the republic. The destabilisation ended with the deployment of Soviet troops to Baku and numerous casualties among the civilian population. Vezirov fled Baku on January 18, 1990 and until his last days has been living in Moscow.
